In terms of capture cards stand alone and budget cards. But the more you buy elgato, the more you want to stay in their bubble because their products synergize well with each other. A lot of their other products are great like the stream deck. The main reason people stand by elgato is because they are used to their bubble because they are the apple of streaming hardware. There are other capture cards on the market that provide lower latency, better color, or audio. They are decent products but they aren't "optimal". genuine USB3.0 is the way to go if I'm gonna pick up a low-cost capture card. Unfortunately, pretty much all low-cost web-cams are USB2.0, so those slots are pretty much entirely taken for me.

So, yeah, long story short, USB2.0 capture devices and webcams really suck if you're gonna be using more of them than the number of USB host controllers your PC has. So you may THINK your device has enough ports for a couple of USB2.0 video devices, until you plug two USB2.0 capture devices in and realize you can't get more than one of them to work at any given point in time. What makes the situation even worse is that a lot of laptops and USB expansion cards that offer "four USB ports" are actually just a single USB host controller coupled with a 4-port hub controller. So you basically just don't get any choice. Worst part is, I could theoretically actually run a couple of USB 2.0 cameras on even the max USB 2.0 bandwidth, but USB2.0 cams tend to be greedy and reserve the entire bandwidth of the bus when plugged in. I can't even use my MIDI keyboard on the same hub that has my overhead camera, because the overhead camera gobbles up all the bandwidth. I have to plug each of those devices into a SEPARATE USB2.0 channel, or they don't work. I know this from personal experience I do a lot of soldering streams, and so I have a microscope feed, overhead feed, face cam, etc. Good luck running both a capture card and a webcam off that. Which is barely enough for a single webcam. And that means all USB2.0 devices on that hub are actually sharing a bandwidth of only 480 Mbit/s. So all USB2.0 devices you plug into that USB 3.0 hub are gonna be sharing the same internal USB2.0 network. But the problem is that USB 3.0's "backward compatibility" with USB 2.0 is literally just to run a separate USB2.0 network on the same port. Theoretically, that hub has 5 Gbit/s bandwidth, which should be plenty for, like, a dozen USB 2.0 webcams. Like, say you have a single USB 3.0 port on your computer, and you use a USB 3.0 hub to expand that to 4 ports. This is because, internally, USB2.0 devices on a USB3.0 bus are actually still using a USB2.0 bus under the hood, and they all share a single internal USB2.0 bus instead of, say, a bunch of parallel/redundant internal USB2.0 busses that can take advantage of the USB3.0 bandwidth. So if you've got, say, a USB2.0 webcam, you won't be able to use that and your USB 2.0 capture card simultaneously, even if it's on a USB3.0 host controller. Here's the problem: Even on a USB3.0 host controller, all USB 2.0 devices share the same 480 Mbit/s bandwidth if they are on the same host controller. If you plug it into a newer gen, the port won't cause any issues with the device.
